• Adaptation to extreme conditions: it enables plants to be grown in harsh environments, with poor soils or extreme weather. Hydroponics also has certain demerits: • The acquisition cost of the hydroponic crop installation is greater than that of conventional agriculture.
• Microorganisms, such as bacteria and molds, can contaminate the water and cause diseases that attack plants. Moreover, without soil as a barrier, these diseases can spread swiftly to the whole system through the water.
• Constant control and monitoring are necessary, both nutrient levels and irrigation and lighting, with sensors and computer systems requiring technical knowledge.
